Coordinated, intercellular activation of biomolecules allows cell collectives to perform more complex tasks and to better tackle environmental challenges. Processes such as wound healing, epithelial homeostasis, and morphogenesis rely on space–time correlations in signalling of cell collectives. In this talk, I will present computational tools developed in our lab that allow us to capture this information exchange and to advance new models of emergent phenomena. I will discuss new observations that oncogenic mutations in the PIK3CA/Akt pathway of MCF10A cells change the epithelial geometry and hyperstimulate intercellular ERK activity waves that are largely dependent on matrix metalloproteinase intercellular signalling. I will also demonstrate our framework and new insights on cell and organism collectives with space–time correlations on different scales in 2D and 3D.
