Multiplicative structure of matrices; from classical to exotic

Badanie multyplikatywnej półgrupy macierzy kwadratowych jest, między innymi, motywowane potrzebami teorii reprezentacji. W klasycznym przypadku, macierzy nad ciałem, struktura półgrupowa nie wydaje się skomplikowana, ale prowadzi do głębokich zastosowań. Przypadek tak zwanych macierzy tropikalnych (czyli macierzy nad półpierścieniem tropikalnym), zwanych także max-plus algebrą, wykazuje uderzające różnice pomiędzy własnościami tych dwóch typów półgrup macierzy. To motywuje pytanie: czy teoria reprezentacji tropikalnych mogłaby prowadzić do ciekawych/ważnych zastosowań? Przedstawimy przykład takiego zastosowania.

The study of the multiplicative semigroup of square matrices is motivated, in particular, by representation theory. In the classical case of matrices over a field the semigroup structure is not complicated, but it leads to deep applications. The case of so called tropical matrices (matrices over the tropical semiring), also referred to as the max-plus algebra, reveals striking differences between the structures of these two types of matrix semigroups. This motivates the question whether tropical representation theory might be of any interest/significance. An example of application is presented.
