INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS OF MATHEMATICS, SECOND-CYCLE PROGRAMME

You need to indicate your preferred choice of diploma seminars when recruiting for a second-cycle degree programme in the system of Internet Recruitment of Candidates (IRK). Seminar allocation is based on ranking lists and determines your choice of master degree programme and specialization. Assignment to seminars is announced at the end of September.

Registration for classes

You need to register for all courses on your own. The only exceptions to this rule are the master seminars and the obligatory specialization courses offered in the winter semester for first-year students with the specialization in Mathematical Methods in Finance ( for more on this, see below).

Choice of courses

The course schedule for second-cycle studies in mathematics can be found here. According to it, you need to complete, i.a. 11 facultative or monographic courses (8 in the first year and 3 in the second year). Within this limit, you need to complete a set of specialization courses assigned to a chosen master programme and specialization track by the end of the second year. Only students who have chosen the Mathematical Methods in Finance programme are required to complete some of the specialization courses already in the first year, though (as mentioned above) they will be registered for courses provided in the winter semester: Introduction to Stochastic Analysis and Financial Engineering, by the Student office.

You can also make up the required limit of facultative/monographic courses by completing up to 2 courses in Computer science or ML; these may be elective or monographic courses for Computer science, as well as some obligatory courses such as Algorithms and Data Structures, Concurrent Programming, Computer Networks, Operating Systems, JAO, MRJP, and Computational Complexity - provided that they have not already been used to settle your first-cycle studies. Credit for obligatory courses for Computer science or ML outside this list requires prior agreement with the head of studies or the vice-dean for student affairs.

• monographic courses for second-cycle studies in mathematics

However, do not register for facultative courses for first cycle studies - you will not fulfill the requirements of the Master degree programme completing them.

Another course to choose is a monographic seminar. Note that you cannot complete a monographic seminar with the same topic as your master seminar (this refers to the situation when both seminars are conducted together - such a situation is indicated in the name of the monographic seminar in USOSweb); and that a given monographic seminar can be completed only once (that is, you should choose a monographic seminar with a different topic in the following year).

In addition to the specialization track resulting from your choice of a master seminar, you may also pursue a teaching specialization. If you decide to do so, contact the Student office and ask to be assigned the tokens needed to register for the courses of this specialization. In this case, you can take pedagogical and psychological courses as general university courses required in your study plan.

Diploma examination process:

In order to complete the first year of a master seminar, you need to have your master thesis topic approved. In order to complete the second year of a master seminar, you need to submit your thesis to the APD (you do not need to print it). You can only take the diploma examination once you have finished studies (i.e. you have completed all the courses required by your study plan). However, you may start arranging the examination date even before you have completed all your credits in Usos.

The master diploma examination is oral. The exam consists of a presentation of the master thesis (up to 15 minutes) and answers to 3 questions related to the master thesis, the topic of the completed master programme and the specialization track.
