We examine a notion from algebraic topology, that of "universal covering groups", with the goal of better understanding unitary groups of C*-algebras. We give a complete description of what these universal covering groups are for unitary groups of von Neumann algebras. Along the way, we discuss some group homology, the de la Harpe-Skandalis determinant, and a bit of algebraic K-theory.
