Progress and Prospects in Floer Homology for 3-manifolds.
June 27, 2005
Delivered by
Tomasz Mrowka (MIT)

CAT'05 will be the sixth in a series of quadrennial conferences on algebraic topology organized in Poland since 1985. The aim of the conference is to bring together mathematicians working in different areas of algebraic and geometric topology. The conference will be devoted to a wide spectrum of research in the areas of homotopy theory, topology of manifolds, geometric group theory, algebraic K-theory and homotopy theory in algebraic geometry. The program will emphasize applications and connections between various fields and is intended to promote exchanges of ideas among mathematicians working in different areas of research related to algebraic topology.

Preliminary schedule

So far the following mathematicians agreed to give plenary talks:

     Eric Friedlander
(Northwestern University)
Semi-topological K-theory.
     Wacław Marzantowicz
(Adam Mickiewicz University)
Homotopy methods in the periodic points theory.
     Tomasz Mrowka

     Bertrand Toën
(Université de Toulouse III)
Derived Algebraic Geometry.
     Burt Totaro
(University of Cambridge)

(University of Aberdeen)
Stratified spaces and homotopy colimit decompositions, with applications to surface theory.
     Krzysztof Ziemiański
(Warsaw University)

Location

The Old Town of Cracow is one of the most spectacular historic monuments of Central Europe. The meeting will be held at the conference center of the Jagiellonian University, located in a picturesque suburb of Cracow. It takes about 30 minutes by public transportation to get from there to the old center of Cracow.
On Wednesday, June 29 afternoon we plan a trip to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, the only site in the world where mining has continued since the Middle Ages.

The address of the conference site is:
Jagiellonian University Congress Centre
Jodłowa 13, Kraków-Przegorzały

Hotel:
Hotel Instytutu Studiów Polonijnych i Etnicznych UJ

Travel Information

1) By plane:
Cracow International Airport "John Paul II" serves a number of international destinations.
You can also fly to Warsaw and take a direct train from Warsaw to Cracow.
Transfer in Warsaw:
The best option is to take a taxi from the taxi stand outside the terminal. You should pay about 25 zloty for the taxi. You can also take a 175 bus which goes directly to the station. For the bus you have to buy a ticket in advance.
2) By train:
Here you can find the train schedule from many places in Europe. You may type in "Krakow" and then choose "Kraków Główny" from a list of possible destinations.
3) By car:
You can obtain a very detailed driving directions from a route planner. The link in the previous sentence has been set so that the "destination address" is the conference site. You need to change only the "departure address" and click "OK".
If you are on the highway A4, approaching Kraków from the West, you take exit onto Mirowska street 6.5 km after a toll gate in Balice (you turn right at the exit). You drive having a Vistula (Wisła) river to your right. After 1.8 km Mirowska street enters Księcia Józefa street, you continue along the river for some 2.5 km until you see this up to your left. Shortly after you turn left into Jodłowa street which, after about 0.1 km, turns left again and climbs up the hill. The conference site is at the end of this street, after about 0.5 km.

Moving around in Cracow:
The best option to get to the conference center is to take a taxi which, from the airport or from the train station should cost about 30 zloty.
If you need to call a taxi, a phone number to "Taxi Barbakan" is 9661 or toll free 0-800-400-400.
