Quillen’s work on formal group laws and complex cobordism opened a new era in algebraic topology.”

D. Ravenel 2012

Geometric cobordism and formal groups

(a graduate course at the University of Warsaw, Tuesdays 10:15 -14:00 CET, in class or on-line, starts October 5, 2021)

Quillen’s work on formal group laws and complex cobordism opened a new era in algebraic topology.”

D. Ravenel 2012

Short summary

The course is devoted to a very surprising connection between classification up to bordism relation of smooth compact manifolds and the theory of formal groups (i.e. formal power series satisfying certain conditions), introduced in analytical context and developed in the context of algebra and algebraic geometry.  This relations, discovered by J. Boardman and D. Quillen at the end of the sixties of the twentieth century,  is the fundamental tool in construction of some cohomology theories which play the central role in the contemporary homotopy theory.  According to D. Ravenel  Quillen’s work on formal group laws and complex cobordism opened a new era in algebraic topology.”
