Zurich is the city of one of the famous religious reformers of the Reformation. Huldrych Zwingli, because we are talking about him, was one of the most radical. During his time, the Swiss Confederation began to be torn apart by religious wars, and Zwingli was a supporter of the wars with Catholic cantons. He was captured during a battle and killed when he refused to confess. He also considered all sacred art to be blasphemy, so all its manifestations in Zurich were destroyed or burned.
For Zwingli’s city, art is doing quite well here today. Kunsthaus is overflowed with the nineteenth and twentieth art: Rodin, van Gogh, Impressionists and above all Chagall.
