Avenches — antiquity and the middle ages

(June 2018)

Perhaps up to 20,000 people lived in Aventicum, the capital of the Roman province of Helvetia. Now it is a tiny, charming town with an atmospheric medieval center. It has 5 times fewer inhabitants than in the times of Roman glory, so the huge amphitheater together with the ruins of the forum, theater and sometimes hardly noticeable ruins of temples are mostly outside the present area of the town, practically in a field of sunflowers, with a view over the medieval walls and towers of the town and the nearby hills.
