Grants and scholarships

Scholarship in the project "Quantum topology and deep learning" (NCN Sonata grant)

  • Topic:
    • Application of machine learning to the intersection of low-dimensional topology and quantum field theory
  • Keywords: knots, 3-manifolds, quivers, string theory, deep learning
  • Research questions:  Can algorithm learn to generate a quiver for a given knot? What distinguishes symmetric quivers that correspond to knots from the rest? What is the relationship between quivers and various kinds of knot invariants?
  • How much:
    • 5000 PLN per month (tax-free scholarship if you are a master or PhD student)
  • For who:
    • Master or PhD students
  • Requirements:
    • Experience in programming, preferably in machine learning
    • BSc or MSc in computer science, mathematics, physics or similar major
    • Interest in quantum topology
    • Interest in research applications of machine learning
  • Tasks:
    • Writing the code (mostly using Python machine learning libraries)
    • Generating and preparing the data (mostly about knots, 3-manifolds, and quivers)
    • Running and optimising algorithms (all three main branches of machine learning will be in use)
    • Performing computations on paper and in Mathematica (related mostly to knots, 3-manifolds, and quivers)
  • Workload: approximately 20 hours per week (depending on your university obligations)
  • Starting date:
    • Jan 1, 2024
  • How long:
    • Up to 33 months (till Sep 30, 2026)
  • Host:
    • Piotr Kucharski
  • Benefits:
    • Possibility of collaboration with researchers and students from California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Rutgers University, University of Amsterdam, Uppsala University, LMU Munich, IAS Dublin, Academia Sinica, University of Tokyo, and other institutions
    • Possibility of participation in workshops, conferences, schools and other research activities covered by the grant
  • How to apply:
    • Send your CV, a list of courses and grades from your studies, and a short description of research interests to piotr.kucharski@mimuw.edu.pl (the documents should also include the following clause: "I consent to the processing of my personal data contained in my offer for the purposes necessary for the recruitment process in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Act of 29 August 1997 (consolidated text: Journal of Laws 2016, item 922, as amended)")
  • Deadline:
    • October 31, 2023 (after that you might be invited for an interview)
