Homepage of the Summer School in Szumin
In 1997 Adam Krawczyk suggested to organize a summer school devoted to
some set theorethical, as well as topological topics. He offered housing
in his cottage in Szumin (80 km to Warsaw) and moreover, convinced his
friends to do the same. So, starting from that moment, a group of students of
topology and set theory every year, until 2001, went to this place to learn a bit a
mathematics from
-
Tomek Bartoszynski (1997); the series of lectures on Cichon's diagram and
constructions of small subsets of the real line,
was based to large extent on his article Invariants of measure
and category, to appear in the upcoming
handbook of set theory (this article might be still avaliable on
his webpage; this is true on 28th December 2001).
- Winfried Just (1998)
lectured on elementary
submodels; his talk was based on a part
of his joint book with Martin Weese
"Discovering Modern Set Theory".
The final talk was about his recent interest - applications of mathematics
to biology.
- Juris Steprans (1999)
gave a series of lectures on applications of
Sacks' forcing.
- Slawek Solecki (2000) gave a series of lectures on a sigma-compact
relation on a given (hereditarily) indecomposable continuum (the
relation of beloging to the same composant).
- In the year 2001 we had two main speakers
-
Ondrej Kalenda surveyed Valdivia compacta and his paper
in Extracta Mathematica 15 (2000) 1-85 presented a quite similar material.
- Grzegorz Plebanek lectured, in particular,
on Banach spaces with the property, that each
weak^*-sequentially continuous functional is already
weak^* continuous (in this case we say that the Banach space has
the Mazur Property ).
-
In addition, single lectures were given by
Marcin Kysiak , Witold Marciszewski, Eva Murtinova
Matias Raja and
Mirna Dzamonja . Mirna gave an account of general set-theoretical
approach to the question of existence of universal objects in a given
class of topological spaces, Boolean algebras etc.
- In the year 2002 the school moved to Martiany (Mazury, Poland), to
Henryk Kozlowski's house.
The school was organized by
Marcin Kysiak , and
Krzysztof Wojciechowski. The
first of them prepared
a short summary of
2002 activities.
Szumin is a beatiful place, in the middle of forests, on the bank
of the river Bug, one of the largest and wildest Polish rivers.
The following series
of picture, took by Eva Murtinova, gives an account of the facts:

The school exists due to the kindness of our guests, who accepted
invitations but also due to a help, annually given by the Head of the Institute
of Mathematics, Warsaw University. The school is a result of people
collaboration; in the area of organization particulary active were:
Piotrek Hoffman (1997),
Marcin Kysiak , Adam Krawczyk,
Witold Marciszewski, Henryk Michalewski, Krzysztof Wojciechowski.
