The Institute has started its activity in traditional fields of applied mathematics: mathematical physics and numerical analysis. But from the beginning new fields of application has been strongly supported. As a result, in addition to the above mentioned traditional areas, research in actuarial and finance mathematics, computer graphics, mathematical biology, mathematical statistics and signal processing are now carried on. Traditional fields develop also new directions. In mathematical physics, the interest is mostly devoted to nonlinear problems for evolution equations (in particular of continuum mechanics). In numerical analysis, the research are concentrated on computational complexity and domain decomposition methods.
